Ujima Hive (Grow Greater Englewood + Beehyyve)

ENGLEWOOD, CHICAGO, IL | COMMUNITY CENTER, BUSINESS INCUBATOR, AND FOOD PANTRY
Creating A Catalyst for Community-Based Innovation

MKB Architects collaborated with Beehyyve on the design of this project. In partnership with The Greater Chicago Food Depository and Urban Growers Collective, Ujima Hive includes the renovation of a former CPS school building into a community center, Hive Market, business incubator/shared office space, and other related uses for Grow Greater Englewood and Teamwork Englewood.

The word “Ujima” comes from the third principle of Kwanzaa, highlighting the importance of collective work and responsibility. The Ujima Hive proposes a new model of Community Center and Business Incubator, where like minded organizations will co-locate to transform an abandoned building into a hive of activity and community growth.

At the ground floor, the building is reoriented toward the south with a new entry and green space. The ground floor of Ujima Hive is an extension of the Englewood community, providing a gathering space, meal service, and a community market. The space is designed to welcome users into a sequence of generous and comfortable spaces for conversations when waiting for services. The design follows trauma-informed principles and Afro-centric and local art.
