Shrine Of Our Lady Of Pompeii

CHICAGO, IL | HISTORIC CHURCH SHRINE INTERIOR RENOVATION
Preserving, Celebrating the Catholic Chicago-Italian Heritage for the Next Generation

Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii is the oldest Italian American Catholic Parish in Chicago’s historic Little Italy neighborhood. A full interior renovation consists of removing previous modifications that steered away from the original Italian design, and research was done to ensure that the faithful was stayed to the design.

MKB Architects used their experience from Italy and research to bring in Italian catholic influenced design from the arches to the terrazzo colors, new liturgical furniture, reinterpreted in a fresh, classical nod but still clean design. The windows and stained glass were modified, the millwork conceals all-new mechanical systems in the sanctuary, while creating a tailored experience for the shrine pilgrimage, as well as for the parish locals function. The accessible circle ramp, liturgical  functions, and cutting the terrazzo out of the hundred year old aisle to remain as a significant feature of the aisle.
